We are very excited to announce that Torbay has been successful in its joint bid with Yachting New Zealand to host the sailing component for the World Master Games in 2017.
With more athletes than the Olympics, the World Master Games is the largest multi-sport event on earth. In April 2017, 25,000 athletes will converge on Auckland to complete in 27 sports in the World Master Games 2017. The announcement of Sailing as an Official Sport was made following an extremely rigorous and highly contested selection process.
Torbay Sailing Club was Yachting New Zealand’s first choice partner when considering the potential for sailing to be an official sport in this prestigious event. The event, race and shore management that delivers the annual Sir Peter Blake Torbay Regatta so successfully showcases the clubs capability and capacity to host a world class sailing event for the competitors of the World Masters Games 2017. Torbay Sailing Club together with Yachting New Zealand have the experience, knowledge and track record to host what will be New Zealand’s largest single and double handed sailing event of the decade.
Yachting New Zealand looks forward to working with the Torbay team and other volunteers from within our sailing community to deliver an event that the athletes will remember for a life time.
Sailing at the event will be raced in the Laser, Laser Radial and the New Zealand designed Weta, with each class having a minimum age of 35.
